Advantages and disadvantages of different types of suspended platforms for building construction

Construction suspended platforms, as efficient aerial work equipment, are widely used in building exterior wall construction, curtain wall installation, high-altitude cleaning, bridge maintenance, and other fields. With the development of engineering technology, the types of construction suspended platforms are becoming increasingly diverse, each with its unique advantages and limitations.

I. Electric Construction Suspended Platform

Electric suspended construction platforms are currently the most widely used aerial work equipment, using electric motors to drive hoists to achieve lifting operations.

Advantages: Operation is simple; smooth lifting and lowering can be achieved with just a control button, significantly reducing the skill requirements for operators. Secondly, its lifting speed is fast, resulting in high work efficiency, making it particularly suitable for large-area, continuous exterior wall work. Furthermore, the electric construction suspension platform has a relatively simple structure, low maintenance costs, and highly interchangeable parts, making later maintenance convenient. In addition, modern electric construction suspension platforms are generally equipped with multiple safety protection devices, such as safety locks, limit switches, and emergency brakes, ensuring reliable safety performance.

Disadvantages: It is highly dependent on power supply, making it difficult to use in remote construction sites with no or unstable power. Additionally, the equipment is quite heavy, placing high demands on the load-bearing capacity of building roofs or suspension mechanisms. Furthermore, it must be shut down under extreme weather conditions, such as strong winds or thunderstorms, making it significantly affected by environmental factors.

II. Manual Construction Suspended Platform

Manually operated suspended platforms for construction rely on human power to raise and lower them using a lever hoist or winch, which is a traditional method of operation.

Advantages: The biggest advantage is that it requires no electricity, making it suitable for special environments without power supply, such as remote mountainous areas and bridges in the wild. The equipment has a simple structure, is lightweight, easy to transport and install, and has low initial investment costs. For short-distance, small-scale operations, the manual construction suspension platform is highly flexible and mobile.

Disadvantages: Manual operation is labor-intensive, and prolonged operation can easily lead to operator fatigue and pose safety hazards. The lifting speed is slow, resulting in low work efficiency and making it unsuitable for large-scale projects. Furthermore, manual control lacks stability and is prone to wobbling, posing challenges to both operational precision and operator psychological well-being.

III. Hydraulic Construction Suspension Platform

Hydraulic construction suspension platforms use a hydraulic system as a power source, and are driven to lift by hydraulic cylinders or hydraulic motors.

Advantages: Hydraulic systems offer high output force and smooth transmission, enabling them to carry heavier materials and accommodate more workers, making them suitable for heavy-duty construction tasks. Hydraulic transmission allows for stepless speed regulation, smooth and shock-free lifting, and high positioning accuracy, making it particularly suitable for precision operations such as glass curtain wall installation. Hydraulic systems also provide excellent overload protection and high safety.

Disadvantages: Hydraulic construction platform equipment is expensive, the hydraulic system is complex, and requires strict maintenance and regular inspections by professionals. Hydraulic oil leaks can cause environmental pollution, limiting its use in areas with stringent environmental regulations. Low temperatures increase hydraulic oil viscosity, affecting equipment start-up and operating efficiency.

IV. Aluminum Alloy Construction Suspended Platform

The aluminum alloy construction suspension platform is a new type of lightweight construction suspension platform with aluminum alloy as the main material.

Advantages: Aluminum alloy has low density and high strength, significantly reducing the weight of the suspended platform used in construction, thus lowering the load requirements on the building structure. This makes it particularly suitable for older buildings or situations where the roof’s load-bearing capacity is limited. Aluminum has excellent corrosion resistance, is not prone to rust, has a long service life, and a clean and aesthetically pleasing appearance. The modular design makes assembly and disassembly convenient and transportation efficient.

Disadvantages: Aluminum alloy materials are more expensive, leading to a higher purchase price for the equipment. The material has relatively low hardness, making it prone to deformation under strong impacts, thus requiring stricter requirements for the operating environment and procedures. Welding repairs are difficult, resulting in high maintenance costs once damaged.

V. Intelligent Building Construction Suspended Platform

The intelligent building construction suspension platform integrates IoT, sensor and automated control technologies, representing the development direction of the industry.

Advantages: Equipped with a real-time monitoring system, it can automatically sense parameters such as wind speed, load, and tilt angle, and automatically alarm or shut down when limits are exceeded, significantly improving safety performance. It supports remote monitoring and data analysis, making it easy for managers to understand equipment status and work progress. Some models can achieve automatic leveling and obstacle avoidance functions, reducing human error.

Disadvantages: Intelligent systems are technologically complex, the equipment is expensive, and require highly skilled operators and maintenance personnel. Electronic components are sensitive to the environment, and the failure rate may increase in high-temperature, high-humidity, and dusty construction environments. System upgrades and repairs rely on manufacturer technical support, and after-sales service costs cannot be ignored.
